Stroke Awareness and Recovery by AbilityPath offers affordable stroke and brain injury therapeutic rehabilitation services for adults ages 18+ to improve independence and quality of life.

All classes are led by licensed physical, occupational, and speech therapists and deliver community-based, small group, and one-on-one services that support recovery.

Mobility and Fitness Skills

Duration: 50 min.

Led by a licensed Physical Therapist, participants in our physical therapy classes address issues related to balance, coordination, mobility, gait, muscle retraining and pain management. Peers encourage each other in a supportive group environment. The focus of the group is to maintain and improve fitness, mobility and strength and to prevent injury.

Daily Living Skills

Duration: 50 min.

Class taught by a licensed occupational therapist. The focus is to practice everyday skills in the areas of physical and cognitive functioning, mobility, socializing, perception of self, relationships, independent living, and safety. We combine individual and group activities that work your body and mind. Whether cooking together, exercising, creating an art project, working on a puzzle with a peer, or gardening, you are actively moving toward healing.

Speech, Language and Cognitive Skills

Duration: 50 min.

Led by a licensed Speech Pathologist, this class is designed to promote camaraderie while enhancing communication abilities. Working in a supportive environment, participants use all possible means to communicate via activities that address speech, language, critical thinking and memory skills. Group conversation provides you the opportunity to discuss meaningful and functional topics and build your confidence to engage more fully in family and community life.

Social/Support group hosted by Pacific Stroke Association meets in-person at Cubberley Community Center the last Wednesday of every month from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm. No need to sign up.

Medical & Rehabilitation Guidance

Our volunteer Medical Director, a Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation physician, partners with the R.E.A.C.H. therapy team to provide rehabilitation consultations, education, and advocacy for participants with complex recovery needs.

R.E.A.C.H. was founded in 1989 by Linda DiNucci and stroke survivor Carol Watson as a stroke recovery class at Foothill College. Today, REACH provides specialized rehabilitation, education, support groups, wellness programs, and resources that help stroke survivors and their families advance recovery, improve quality of life, and navigate life after stroke.

Who is AbilityPath?

AbilityPath is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization headquartered in Redwood City that has served people with developmental and acquired disabilities, and their families, for more than 100 years. A CARF-accredited organization, we are unique in providing a lifespan of comprehensive support ‒ from early intervention for infants, to community access and job training for adults and seniors. How did AbilityPath get started with stroke services?

With the closure of Services for Brain Injury and REACH Program in 2022, there would have been no remaining non-profit rehabilitation organizations on the Peninsula for people with stroke or brain injuries. The programs and missions closely align with the work of AbilityPath, which is committed to ensuring people of all abilities achieve their full potential. Similar to AbilityPath’s lifespan of services, the concept of long-term stroke and brain injury rehabilitation is to provide comprehensive services that include group-based programs and individual therapies. Providing stroke and brain injury rehabilitation is another way AbilityPath is innovating and adapting to the needs of our most vulnerable friends, neighbors, and community members.
