“Most of my patients were at least somewhat aware of the signs and symptoms of heart disease, but even in recent years, were unaware of the often subtle suggestions of cerebrovascular (stroke) disease. There is a continuing need to educate the general public, not only to recognize signs and symptoms in themselves ,but to be alert to identify them in others.”

Robert D. Wuerflein, MD
Cardiac Surgeon

One of the key goals for the Stroke Awareness Foundation is to educate the public about stroke awareness. Since 2002, the Foundation has delivered more than 20 training presentations to 1500 members of local community groups. These presentations have included the San Jose Rotary Club, the South Bay Emergency Medical Directors Association and senior centers.

Public education on the signs of stroke, symptoms and access to care is vital to stroke victim recovery. Patients need to arrive at a certified stroke center well within three hours of the onset of symptoms. Many patients do not realize that they are having a stroke, and it is often a family member, co-worker or bystander who needs to recognize the symptoms and call for help.

The Foundation will provide stroke awareness training at places of worship, senior centers, clubs and organizations, and employer corporate offices.
Our trainers and community outreach representatives plan to conduct stroke awareness training at several locations:

Please visit the Stroke Awareness Events Calendar for schedules and locations.
