Beryl Israel, Chairman & Executive Director
Vice President, Account Services, 3marketeers Advertising

Beryl Israel is currently Vice President, Account Service of 3marketeers Advertising, responsible for working with the agency's client/partners, account managers, and the creative and technology teams to ensure the highest possible results. Just prior to joining 3marketeers, Ms. Israel was Chief Advancement Officer of The Health Trust. Ms. Israel was also CEO of a leading Silicon Valley advertising and public relations agency partnering with a diverse group of clients over the almost 20 years with the firm. She has a successful track record with local, regional and national companies in market sectors including high-tech, healthcare, insurance & financial services, construction, real estate, education and public sector/non-profit.

Ms. Israel currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Stroke Awareness Foundation and is President of The Ad+ Club of Silicon Valley. She also works in a volunteer capacity for several non-profits including the Santa Clara County Office of Education, Rotacare of San Jose, Via Services and The Health Trust. Ms. Israel earned a B.S. degree in Journalism from the University of Oregon.

Patricia Dando, Vice Chairman
President/CEO, San Jose/Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce

In September, 2005, Pat Dando assumed the position of Chief Executive Officer and President with the San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce. Since January of 2005, Ms. Dando had served in Governor Schwarzenegger's administration providing leadership to such initiatives as the San Joaquin Partnership, the Governor's decision to pay Proposition 42 money to Cities and Counties and the coordination with the State office of Emergency Services and local electeds of Cities/Counties across California to provide outreach for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Pat previously served as a San Jose City Council Member and Vice Mayor from 1995-2005. Ms. Dando received a bachelor's degree in elementary Education and English from North Texas State University, and in 2002 she graduated from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy's School of Government.

Charles E. Hoffman, Treasurer
Founder, Zacmi USA

Charles Hoffman founded Zacmi USA in 1994 which established a new market for high speed filling of food products. Mr. Hoffman ran the business until his retirement in 2002. From 1989 to 1993, Mr. Hoffman was Vice President of A.K. Robins Co. where he opened new worldwide markets. Mr. Hoffman spent 26 years as Sales Manager for Magnuson Engineers responsible for global markets. Prior to that, Mr. Hoffman was an officer in his family wholesale produce business in Chicago and responsible for machinery sales for Food Technology Corporation. Mr. Hoffman earned both a BS in business administration and a BS in economics at Western Michigan University in 1948. He attended Northwestern University Graduate School of Business during 1949. Mr. Hoffman’s military service was in the U.S. Army from 1949 to 1951. In addition to Treasurer of the Stroke Awareness Foundation, Mr. Hoffman is a member of both the Downtown San Jose Rotary Club, the National Heart Association Stroke Committee. He is also Director of the Forty Niner Club, Prestigious Food Group.

William B. ("Bill") Baron
Partner, Brandenburg Properties

Since 1983, Bill has been engaged with the company in all aspects of real estate acquisitions, dispositions, entitlement, financing and development. He oversees daily operations of the company while specifically managing certain projects located in Northern and Southern California, Georgia, South Carolina and British Columbia.

Bill is a graduate of San Jose State University and a fourth-generation San Josean. He actively serves his community as a member of the Rotary Club of San Jose, board member and past board chair of the San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce, Trustee of COMPAC, the Chamber's Political Action Committee, board member of the Stroke Awareness Foundation, board member of the Baron Student Leadership Award at San Jose State University, board member of Baseball San Jose, member of the Sainte Claire Club and member of the American Heart Association Monopoly Night gala.

Bill is the recipient of numerous distinctions, including: the National Society of Fund Raising Executives Distinguished Volunteer Award in 1998, the Volunteer of the Year Award given by the American Heart Association for 1997-1998 and 2001, a Laureate distinction given by Junior Achievement 2006, and the Small Business Advocate of the Year given by the California Chamber of Commerce 2006. He also served on San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed's 2007 Transition Team.

Bill is married and has two children. He enjoys golf, travel and cooking.

Vince DeCarolis
Principal & Founder, DeCarolis Design & Marketing

In 1991, Vince DeCarolis founded DeCarolis Design & Marketing, a full-service advertising agency located in downtown San Jose focusing on business-to-business marketing. Prior to establishing the agency, Mr. DeCarolis was a partner in Performance Marketing Group, giving seminars throughout the U.S. on print and advertising sales. In 1979, he co-founded and was President of Cubegraphics Inc., a screen printer and offset lithographer specializing in promotional advertising merchandise. The company was sold to the Norwood Promotional Group in 1988.

In addition to the Stroke Awareness foundation, Mr. DeCarolis currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Silicon Valley Capital Club and the Hakone Foundation. He holds a BA from the University of San Francisco.

David Henderson
President, Samaritan Medical Center

With more than 20 years of management experience and community involvement, David Henderson chaired the Community Task Force that laid the groundwork for establishment of The Health Trust in 1996 and served as Board Chairman for The Health Trust from 1997 to 2002. Mr. Henderson has also served as President of Samaritan Medical Center since 1988 and is responsible for leasing, managing and developing medical office properties. With a portfolio consisting of 230,000 square feet of developed buildings, Samaritan Medical Center’s latest project is a 70,000-square-foot medical office building with a five-level parking structure. Mr. Henderson previously served on the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation, successfully raising $220,000 in funds for the Foundation during 1994 and 1995. Earlier in his career, Mr. Henderson was General Manager with Arrow Electronics, a $10.2 billion worldwide distributor of electronic components. Mr. Henderson currently holds leadership responsibilities with his church and coaches children’s sports. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in business from Pennsylvania State University.

Thomas W. Ross

Thomas W. Ross, an executive with over 25 years of experience in the medical device field, founded Acta Vasular Systems, Inc. Mr. Ross, President and CEO of Acta Vascular, was most recently Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Parallax Medical, a small interventional radiology company, and has been Vice President of Sales and Marketing for successful start-ups in the fields of interventional radiology and spine orthopedics since 1989. Mr. Ross also has held key sales and marketing management roles in device companies owned by Eli Lilly, Medtronic and Baxter. In total, Mr. Ross has been an important factor in over $450 million in public financings, private placements and corporate acquisitions of the five start-up device companies for which he has been an officer. Ross received his BA in Biology from the UCLA School of Public Health and his MBA from the UCLA School of Management.

Charles J. Toeniskoetter
Chairman & CEO of Toeniskoetter & Breeding, Inc.

Charles Toeniskoetter is Chairman of TBI Construction & Construction Management, Inc., which has constructed more than $750 million of buildings, and Chairman and CEO of Toeniskoetter & Breeding, Inc. Development, which has developed 2.5 million square feet of buildings and manages a portfolio of two million square feet. He co-founded both companies in 1983 in San Jose. He also heads the partnership that owns resort properties at Bear Valley in Alpine County. Mr. Toeniskoetter is a director of three publicly held companies, Heritage Commerce Corp., SJW Corp., and the Redwood Trust, Inc. His volunteer work has included University of Notre Dame, San Jose Development Review Committee, Downtown San Jose Rotary Club, O’Conner Hospital Board of Directors, Valley Medical Center Foundation, Archbishop Mitty High School and the Children’s Discovery Museum. Mr. Toeniskoetter graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1967 with a BS in mechanical engineering; and from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1973. He served in Vietnam with the Marine Corps.

 

Gregory W. Albers, MD
Director, Stanford Stroke Center

Dr. Gregory Albers has been the Director of the Stanford Stroke Center since its inception in 1992. He joined the Stanford University Medical Center in 1988 and has served as Professor of Neurology and Neurological Sciences since 1999. Dr. Albers is a leader in the clinical care of stroke patients as well as cerebrovascular research and education. Dr. Albers has published more than 150 articles in the medical literature and has been the principal investigator of more than 50 clinical studies. Dr. Albers has chaired multiple consensus panels that have published national and international guidelines for stroke treatment and prevention. Under his guidance, the Stroke Center has trained more than two dozen clinical stroke specialists; many of whom are directing stroke centers at academic institutions throughout the country. Dr. Albers’ current research focus is the use of new MRI techniques to expand the treatment window for administration of intravenous thrombolytic therapy. He is currently leading a National Institutes of Health-funded multi-center clinical trial investigating the role of diffusion and perfusion MRI in identifying patients who are most likely to benefit from stroke therapies. Dr. Albers earned his MD at the University of California, San Diego in 1984 and completed his Internship, Residency and Fellowship at the Stanford University Medical Center.

Harmeet Sachdev, MD
Stroke Center Director, Good Samaritan Hospital

Dr. Harmeet Sachdev joined Good Samaritan Hospital as a practicing neurologist in 1986 and has been director of the Stroke Center at Good Samaritan Hospital since 1997. Dr. Sachdev was the first to render t-PA treatment for stroke in the San Jose area. He created the first stroke team in a community hospital and demonstrated that acute stroke treatment can be done successfully outside the academic centers. Prior to that, he had been in private practice as a neurologist in San Jose since 1980. Dr. Sachdev has been a clinical assistant professor of neurology at Stanford University Medical Center since 1993. He has published two dozen papers, presentations and studies regarding stroke treatment and prevention. Dr. Sachdev has also been the principal investigator in six different neuroprotective studies for stroke and has been honored several times by the American Heart Association and by the American Academy of Neurology for his achievements in stroke education. He completed both his residency and chief residency in neurology at Stanford University Medical Center and affiliated hospitals. Dr. Sachdev also completed other internal medicine residency programs at Sinai Hospital at Wayne State University, hospitals associated with the University of Wales U.K, and Post Graduate Institute of India. He is an affiliate of the Western States Consortium and a member of the Stroke Council at the national level.

 

Sherry Houston
Executive Director

Sherry Houston assumed the position of Program Manager for the Stroke Awareness Foundation in February 2007. Ms. Houston Co-founded Bankers Mortgage Funding and has since served as Project Administrator for Samaritan Medical Center. She currently works with local high school youth groups and has been an active leader within the Union School District. Sherry spent several years living abroad and was employed by Northwest Airlines. Her early endeavors into community work include youth counseling and volunteer recruitment for the Santa Clara County Juvenile Probation Department. She holds a degree in Administration of Justice.

Robert Parsons
Training and Outreach

Bob Parsons joined the Stroke Awareness Foundation to provide training and outreach in August, 2004. A recovered stroke victim, Mr. Parsons had volunteered with the Stanford Stroke Center where he built it's Outreach Program, and the Peninsula Stroke Association. He still talks to community groups for the Neuroscience Institute at Stanford about stroke, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other neurological diseases. In 1995, Mr. Parsons co-founded Nahman-Parsons, a sales training company that trained most of the worldwide salesforces for Silicon Valley semiconductor and electronic design automation companies including Altera, Synopsys and Cadence. Mr. Parsons graduated from Stanford University in 1966 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and again in 1969 with an MBA.
