Low-Carb, High Protein Diets Put Women at Risk for Stroke
According to a study published in the British Medical Journal, women are more likely to develop high cholesterol and cardiovascular disease, such as heart disease and stroke, if they regularly consume a low-carb, high protein diet. These diets involve increasing protein to 30%-50% of your daily intake.
Too much protein forces your body to rely on its fat stores for energy instead of relying on the carbohydrate-rich items you might typically consume. Red meat, whole dairy products and high fat foods are not healthy for the body in excess. The study indicates that any benefits gained from these diets in the short-term, such as weight loss, seem irrelevant in the face of increasing evidence of higher morbidity.
